Pirates Keep Fighting Despite Losing
By: Adrian Holman | Thursday September 2nd, 2010

Even though the Pittsburgh Pirates are five games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the worst record in Major League Baseball, the Pirates continue to fight on despite having a woeful record.

An example of their tenacity occurred this week after the Pirates were clobbered by the Chicago Cubs 14-2 on Monday night.  Instead of moping about being taken to the woodshed, Pittsburgh fought back on Tuesday by winning 14-7.  I admire that the Pirates have not given up.  For all of those thinking about quitting in life, choose to endure because circumstances are only temporary.

For the Pirates, there is a glimmer of hope next season based upon the play of 2B Neil Walker.  Since he has received the opportunity to play every day, Walker has taken total advantage of the situation.  Over the past five games, he is batting .480 with 4 HR’s and 8 RBI’s!  Keep up the good play!

Even though the Pirates lost two of three against the Cubs, that win was necessary on Tuesday because the Cubs are cursed.  With how bad the Pirates are, adding a curse to the team would be detrimental to the team’s future.  I say that the Cubs are cursed because they have not won the World Series since 1908.  You would think that by sure luck the Cubs would have won another World Series by now.

Many people have made up flimsy theories as to why the Cubs are cursed, such as Babe Ruth calling his shot against the Cubs in the 1932 World Series, the “Billy Goat Curse” during the 1945 World Series, the black cat crossing the Cubs dugout during their collapse in 1969, and the Bartman bobble against the Florida Marlins during the National League Championship Series in 2003.

However, the real reason that the Chicago Cubs are cursed is because of Cap Anson.  Cap Anson was a player/manager for the Chicago Cubs from 1876-1897.  Anson will forever be known as the catalyst that segregated baseball in 1883 until 1945.  The Cubs never berated him for his racial intolerance, nor have the Cubs apologized to MLB for allowing Anson to remain on the team.  Once the Chicago Cubs organization apologizes publicly for accepting the racial intolerance of Cap Anson, then the curse will be lifted off of the team.  Up until that point occurs, I will make sure that the curse remains upon the Chicago Cubs.

The Pirates are cursed- by bad ownership. They have some good players, but have no idea how to develop them. They are unwilling to get any but the most bargain basement free agents to augment the kids, than get all hot and bothered toi trade anyone who looks halfway decent. Most of the other organizations like the Twins and Marlins, figure out a way to be competitive. Even the Royals improved this year. They are a mockery and I feel sorry for their great fans and their fine young players.
