Lakers Repeat!

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers for repeating as NBA world champions by defeating the Boston Celtics 83-79 in Game 7.  Who would have thought that Ron Artest would one day be an integral part of a championship team after ‘The Malice In The Palace’ that occurred a few years ago?  Artest played 46 out of the 48 minutes of the game while playing strong defense on the Celtics Paul Pierce.  His ballhawking skills led to five steals.  Plus, he added twenty points tonight as both teams shot horribly in this defensive struggle.

You seriously have to give Artest his due because the only major difference between both teams when Boston drubbed the Lakers two years ago is him.  The lesson learned is to never give up and to take advantage of second chances no matter how impossible the odds may seem.

World Cup Upsets

Along with the humongous upset of Spain by Switzerland on Wednesday, Mexico scorched France 2-0 yesterday.  France was considered to be one of the favorites before this World Cup started.  Now, the French team must win their final match by five goals and hope that the Uruguay/Mexico game does not end up in a draw.  It’s sad to watch the World Cup with all of the empty seats.  Is South Africa that horrible?  The answer is a resounding yes.  Who would want to travel to a country in which one out of every three people between 18 and 30 has AIDS?  Is it wrong for me to want the Netherlands to win the World Cup solely because there would be the biggest riot in South Africa based upon the history of apartheid within the country?

McGehee’s Weird Game

In Monday’s game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the bats finally woke up for the Brewers as they won 12-2.  However, the weird events of the game occurred in the sixth and seventh inning to Casey McGehee.

In the sixth inning, McGehee hit a shot deep to center field that appeared to be headed out of the park.  Angels CF Torii Hunter, known for pulling back home run balls, jumped near the fence.  It appeared that Hunter caught the ball.  However, the ball popped out of his glove and went over the fence for a home run.  Never again will we see one of the greatest defensive outfielders of all time botch a play like that.

In the seventh inning, McGehee was back at the plate and was hit by a pitch as retaliation for two other Angels hitters being hit by pitches earlier in the game.  The next batter grounded the ball to the first baseman, who threw to second to force out McGehee.  McGehee was still steaming after being hit by the pitch and steamrolled Angels SS Erick Aybar with his slide.  McGehee must have been watching the World Cup because it looked like one of those sliding tackles in which players are ejected from the game.  Aybar had to leave the game with a hyperextended left knee.

Pirates Really Suck!

We all know that the Pittsburgh Pirates have a horrible baseball team, but it has reached an all-time low.  Yesterday’s 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox now puts their current losing streak at 11 games.  They now have the worst record in the National League at 23-43.  Fortunately, they play the Cleveland Indians this weekend.  Therefore, the streak should end because the Indians are 25-40.  I hope that you don’t buy tickets to any of those games in the three game series.
