No runner reaches third…
By: Travis Foster | Friday April 16th, 2010

The Met’s pitching finally comes through, snapping a four game losing streak and shutting out the Colorado Rockies 5-0.  Not only did pitcher Mike Pelfrey hold the Rockies to only five hits, but Pelfrey himself scored more runs then the entire Rockies team.

With steady, solid pitching, Pelfrey allowed no runs and even kept the Rockies from ever reaching third base. In fact, only two Rockies players manged to make it into scoring position. Considering the dimensions of Coors Field, this is quite the accomplishment. Pelfrey knocked batters around with his fastball and surprised quite a few with a near perfect splitter.  And what a beautiful imagine to end the first inning: Jason Giambi striking out; nothing makes me smile more.

The Met’s hitting squad made solid improvements as well. During Wednesday’s game against the Rockies the Met’s hit only one in 12 with a man in scoring position; Thursday game, the Met’s hit four for 14. This is a great jumping off point for this weekends series with the St. Louis Cardinals. As long as the pitching comes through like it did today, St. Louis should be a cake walk.

The Met’s defense performed so well, even Francisco Rodriguez got to take the mound for an inning. Rodriguez closed for the Met’s, although it wasn’t considered a “save” opportunity, chances are he enjoyed just being out on the field. With so many loses last season, Rodriguez didn’t see too many games; unless you count the ones watched from the bullpen. Rodriguez only took the mound nine times last season with only three wins.

However, not everything was so picture perfect, but then again, it never can be with the Met’s.

The Met’s offense missed a few easy opportunities and even quintessential base stealer (well maybe in his prime), Jose Reyes, was caught trying to steal third. Reyes, by the way, is most likely going to be hitting third, instead of the typical lead-off spot against St. Louis. That’s only if Reyes is healthy enough and no doubt Manager Jerry Manuel is antsy to find out.

All in all, it feels good to be a Met’s fan for a change. Here’s to hoping they can keep it up!
