Over the past week, many things have happened in sports to keep fans buzzing all around the nation. In anticipation for a stellar sports weekend that will have the Kentucky Derby, NBA Playoffs, and the biggest boxing match of the season, let’s take a look back at some of the things that happened so that we will be able to move on and enjoy the next couple of days.
In the NBA playoffs, the San Antonio Spurs were able to oust Dallas last night to move on to the second round. Credit must be given to the Spurs for peaking at the right time due to the fact that injuries plagued their entire season. On the other hand, Maverick fans must be really disappointed that Dirk Nowitski choked again in a series in which Dallas was the presumed favorite and in which Dallas possibly had a chance to win the NBA finals after their blockbuster trade during the middle of the season to bolster their roster.
To make things even more interesting in the NBA playoffs is that San Antonio will be playing the Phoenix Suns in the second round. Out of the past seven years, the Spurs have knocked the Suns out of the playoffs four times. Phoenix will have to find a way to break the jinx.
Before the Diamondbacks-Cubs game yesterday afternoon in Chicago, hundreds of people stood outside of Wrigley Field protesting the immigration law that was recently passed in the state of Arizona. Protests are planned for the rest of the series that will run through Sunday. With protests going on nationwide, watch for the protests to continue when Phoenix plays in San Antonio for games 3&4.
Back to baseball. In the NL Central, the only team over .500 is St. Louis. The Milwaukee Brewers took a step back this week by losing 2 out of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates and threw up a bagel in its loss to the San Diego Padres last night. The Brewers are now only a half game out from being in last place.
The Texas Rangers are currently in last place in the AL West. They are currently a game and a half behind the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Oakland Athletics. Texas can bring themselves out of last place if they win two out of three this weekend against the Seattle Mariners. The Rangers lineup will be reenergized as 2B Ian Kinsler is now back with the team after being on the disabled list.
