As my ChiSox loving cohort and I previewed, the mid-week series between the Tigers and the Twins was going to be rough on the car-city kids. The Tigers were not hitting well, despite coming off the weekend sweep of the Indians. The Twins on the other hand, were only heating up.

On Wednesday night, aging Phillies starter Jamie Moyer gave up seven earned runs in 4.1 innings. Boston’s Tim Wakefield, who was 4-1 with an ERA under three, gave up seven earned in 4.2 innings. Toronto’s starter Scott Richmond, who was also 4-1, gave up five earned runs in less than two innings. Amongst the early departure list was another name; a name some people didn’t expect to see in the box scores ever again.
After a notable mechanical melt-down and a gaudy ERA, Dontrelle Willis was sent to the DL and down to the developmental, Class-A minor leagues for much of the 2008 season. The mission: try to make sense of what had happened to one of the best young pitchers in baseball.
